Young Adults During The U.s. - 2279 Words

Young adults in the U.S. commonly have their first job by the time of their third and fourth years of high school. At this time in their lives, they aren t exposed to a lot of politics or economics; it s easy to conform to biased opinions at this age. It s easy to jump onto social media and learn one side of an issue, which is something that most teens do. But, being more open-minded and doing research is something that should be more encouraged to younger groups of people. As I start to look for my first real job, I have started asking myself is there a wage gap between men and women, or blacks and whites, or middle class and upper class? Most say yes, there is. But I decided to do my own research and form my own opinion – a well-educated opinion. I ve watched and read a speech by Nick Hanauer called, Beware Fellow Plutocrats: The Pitchforks Are Coming. Plutocrats are the top .01% in the U.S. economy, literally the tippy top of the upper class, and seemingly the most hated gr oup of the middle class. According to a Business Insider article, written and edited by G. Lubin, half of America owns 2.5% of [the] country s wealth [and] the top 1% owns 33.8% of it. (Lubin 2011) These numbers are astounding, and makes me wonder if class gaps have anything to do with the supposed inequality wage gaps. Nick Hanauer claims that inequality today is at a historic high and it s getting worse every day.
